Serious About God::: Devotional

Day 9: Giving

One of the awesome aspects of coming to know God is the realization that He created everything… and He owns everything. As David stated in his psalm,

The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein (Psalm 24:1 KJV).

There is great comfort to be taken in that understanding. God owns everything, and He made man to be a steward over what is His. To be a steward is like being a manager over what God has given you. Paul was explaining this concept to the Corinthians when he said, “Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). As a Christian, you must learn to be faithful in the use of what is yours, including your time, talents, possessions, resources and finances.

The word ‘tithe’ simply means ‘tenth.’ For example, if you receive a paycheck (gross pay, not net) for $100, your ‘tithe’ on that amount would be $10. When you give God what belongs to Him through your local church, you are acting in obedience to His Word.

  • Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thine increase (Proverbs 3:9 KJV).
  • Jacob told the Lord, “…and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You” (Genesis 28:22 NKJV).

However, when you withhold the tithe, either through fear, unbelief, selfishness or something else, God looks at that as robbing Him; read Malachi 3:8-10 KJV .
